Nokia Phones Really Do Stop Bullets

0

It’s a running joke how the Nokia phones of years gone by are so tough, however. that might also be true for its newer models.

Microsoft’s General Manager of Core UX Peter Skillman reported that an Afghani man was saved by his Nokia phone last week after a bullet got stuck in it.

That being said, other brands like the iPhone & HTC Evo 3D have also behaved as Kevlar vests in the past. Keep in mind though that Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones are doing the opposite by acting as actual explosives due to their faulty batteries.

Happy Belated Birthday: Google Just Turned 18!

0

18 Years ago Google first saw the light of day, to make it the world’s favourite search engine, browser, map service, email client, mobile OS, ok, let’s stop there. The world as we know it would be very incredibly different if it weren’t for Google with at least one third of the global population using its very many services.

Doodler Gerben Steenks designed this Doodle in celebration of Google’s 18th birthday.

Apple has nothing compared to that. Take a moment to let that sink in. Even tech companies aspire to reach the indispensable status that Google has achieved. Amazon & Facebook have come closest to replicating Google’s success but through rather different approaches.
Google’s relevance can be attributed to its ubiquity & quality of its services. Google’s strategy of being everywhere so that it no longer matters where its users are or what programmes they use has put it above the rest.
Even though this blog post is coming late we at TechPhreak use this opportunity to wish Google an Happy Belated Birthday and we hope it’s not too late to share some cakes.

Xiaomi Mi Max and Mi 4c Joins The List Of Exploding Devices In China

0

Recently, reports of smartphones exploding have been on the increase. This is mainly due to Samsung’s latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 which has a faulty battery and has led to many explosions of the device.

According to ADH Xiaomi Mi Max and Mi 4c has just joined the list of exploding devices in China.

The two smartphones in question are the Xiaomi Mi Max and the Xiaomi Mi 4c, both of which were only recently launched by the Chinese company. The first case of explosion occurred earlier this month and involved the 6.44-inch Mi Max phablet. In the incident, the device was being charged with the official charger in a home and it exploded, which caused a fire and also damaged the home. The device was bought from Xiaomi’s official online store. In the second case, a man had his Mi 4c in his back pocket and it exploded, which caused him to suffer third-degree burns to his hips. It is still unclear what caused the explosion. The Mi 4c was also purchased directly from Xiaomi’s website.

Reports by the Central News Agency, Xiaomi has appointed a third-party organization to investigate both cases of explosion. It has also been reported that the company has said that both incidents are accidents and will be offering compensation to all affected victims. However, this is not the first time the Chinese smartphone maker has been linked to cases of smartphone explosions. Back in early August, it was reported that a Xiaomi Mi 5, which is the company’s current flagship device, exploded, with images of the aftermath surfacing on Weibo, a popular social media platform in China. A Xiaomi Mi 4i was also reported to have exploded, a week before the Xiaomi Mi 5 incident surfaced.

Even though the iPhone 7 is still new Apple has estimated the sales to increase by 10% due to the unfortunate incidents that the best phone in the world (Note 7) is going through.

Meanwhile The new iPhones are available for pre-order now and will be available starting on September 16 for nothing less than $649, while the iPhone 7 Plus will start at $769.

Yesterday at Apple’s event in San Francisco Tim Cook officially unveils the long awaited iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

The phone will be available with a new jet black colorway, said Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple. It will also available in a more regular black shade. “We call it simply, ‘Black,’” Schiller said. It’s also available in gold, silver, and rose gold (read: pink).

The phones feature several hardware changes relative to previous models, including the much debated removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack in place of a second speaker grille, recessed antenna lines on the back, a “force-sensitive, solid-state” home button that works with Apple’s 3D Touch, and dual rear cameras on the larger model. But altogether, they don’t look all that different from the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus released last year, or the 6 and 6 Plus from 2014

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus both carry optical image stabilizers, as well as six-element lenses, wider aperture, quad-LED flash, and a new Apple-designed digital signal processor (DSP), Schiller said. The phones both have a new 7MP FaceTime camera on the front, up from 5 megapixels. And they can shoot in RAW format.

The iPhone 7 Plus uses twin 12-megapixel cameras. The wide-angle camera uses a 28mm lens, and the telephoto lens comes in at 56mm. Optical zoom goes up to 2x, and digital zoom goes up to 10x.

Later this year Apple will release an update to iOS 10 that will make it possible for the iPhone 7 Plus to see Live Previews with bokeh, or blurred backgrounds, while taking portrait photos, Schiller said.

Storage has been upgraded rapidly: 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The jet black option will only have the larger two options available. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus from last year are seeing their storage choices go up, too: 32GB and 128GB.

The iPhone 7 will start at $649, while the iPhone 7 Plus will start at $769.

Preorders begin on September 9, and they’ll be available on September 16. As for iOS 10, it will come out for everyone on September 13.

Also, Apple is expanding its iPhone Upgrade Program. It’s going beyond the U.S. and coming to China and the United Kingdom. It starts at $32 per month and is not tied to any carrier.

Google Duo : Another FaceTime Headache

0

Officially Launched Aug 11 2016 and has over 1 Million Downloads. Wow!

Most people think Google Duo is another application like Skype;

Wrong!

It’s a cross platform mobile application with an overly simplistic and easy to use UI that enables you make free video calls with other Duo users, and nothing else.

Designed to work with Google Allo, it is rumored to be Googles’ answer to Apple’s Facetime. It also provides the kind of end—to end—encryption seen in WhatsApp that ensures user privacy and data security.

Duo does not only work on Android smartphones, it’s also available for iOs (duh.. Apple).

Easier to use: Just input your number and you’re ready to go, you don’t even need to have a Google account before you can use Duo. A one time verification code is sent to your phone and you have a screen where you can make calls to your contacts provided they are available on Duo.

Conclusion: The simplicity of Duo and cross platform availability provides staggering competition for already widely adopted video calling apps like Facetime and Skype. Let the fanboys pray Google’s ingenuity (or name) and material-magic pushes it to first place.
